If one bedroom runs five degrees warmer than the rest of the house, the air conditioner is usually working fine. The cold air is being made. It is just not arriving. That is a ventilation problem, and a good share of it you can diagnose yourself before anyone charges you a call-out fee.

The number that explains most of it

ENERGY STAR puts it plainly: about 20 to 30 percent of the air that moves through a duct system is lost to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts. Not lost in the sense of wasted energy alone. Lost in the sense of never reaching the room you are standing in.

Cold air is made in one place and has to travel

A central system does two jobs that people tend to merge into one. It cools air, and it moves air. Almost every complaint about a hot room is the second job failing, not the first.

The tell is simple. If the whole house is uniformly warm and the air from every vent is barely cool, that points at the cooling equipment. If most of the house is comfortable and one or two rooms are not, the equipment is likely fine and the air is going somewhere other than where you want it.

Ducts running through an attic, a crawlspace or a garage make this worse, because anything that escapes on the way is not merely delayed. It is cooling a space nobody lives in.

The five signs ENERGY STAR tells you to look for

This is their list, not ours, and it is a good one because every item is something you can observe without a tool.

High summer and winter bills

Both seasons matters. A duct problem is season neutral, because it leaks whatever you paid to condition. A summer only spike points elsewhere.

Rooms that are difficult to heat and cool

Again, both. The room that is hot in August and cold in January is the same room getting too little air all year.

Stuffy rooms that never feel comfortable

Stuffy is not the same as hot. It usually means air is arriving but not leaving, which is a return air problem rather than a supply one.

Ducts in an attic, crawlspace or garage

Not a fault by itself, but it raises the cost of every other fault on this list. Worth knowing which you have before you call anyone.

Tangled or kinked flexible ducts

Flex duct crushed behind a stored box, or drooping in long sags, restricts airflow badly. This is the single most common thing a homeowner can spot and fix in an afternoon.

Twenty minutes of checks, before you call anyone

1. Pull the filter and hold it up to a light

If you cannot see light through it, it is choking the whole system, and the room at the end of the longest duct run starves first. That is why the symptom shows up in one room rather than everywhere.

2. Walk the house and look at every register

Count them, open them all, and note anything with a sofa, a rug or a bed over it. Then hold a tissue near each one with the system running. You are not measuring anything, you are comparing: the weak one tells you which duct run to investigate.

3. Find your return vents, and count those too

Returns are the big grilles that pull air back. Many houses have far too few. If the hot room has a supply vent but no return and you keep the door shut, you have built a pressurised box that the air cannot flow through. Try leaving that door open for a day and see what changes.

4. Look at whatever ductwork you can actually see

Attic, basement, crawlspace, garage. You are looking for disconnected sections, crushed flex, sagging runs and dangling tape. Old cloth duct tape that has gone brittle and let go is extremely common and is exactly the kind of leak the 20 to 30 percent figure is describing.

The fix that makes it worse

The instinct is to close the vents in rooms nobody uses, so more cold air goes to the room that needs it. It is a reasonable theory and it usually backfires.

The blower is trying to move a set volume of air. Closing registers does not tell it to move less, it just leaves fewer openings for the same air, and the pressure inside the ductwork rises. That extra pressure pushes harder on every joint and hole your ducts already have, so more air escapes into the attic rather than less. On a duct system that leaks, restricting it tends to increase the leak.

The blower also works harder against the resistance. So the common outcome is a room that is no cooler, a system running longer and a bill that goes up. If you have already closed vents, opening them back up is a free experiment worth running for a few days.

What actually needs a technician

Three things below are worth paying for, and knowing their names changes the conversation you have on the phone.

A static pressure reading

The blood pressure test of a duct system. It takes a competent technician a few minutes and tells you whether the system is fighting the ductwork. If nobody offers to measure it, you are getting a guess.

A duct leakage test

Pressurises the duct system and measures what escapes, which turns the national 20 to 30 percent average into your actual number. This is the one that settles the argument about whether sealing is worth it in your house.

A load calculation

Works out what the house actually needs, room by room. Ask for it if a contractor recommends replacing the unit. An oversized system short cycles, which cools the thermostat hallway quickly and leaves the far bedroom behind, and a bigger one makes that worse rather than better.

Be careful with a quote that jumps straight to replacing the equipment because one room is hot. That may genuinely be the answer. It is also the most expensive possible answer to a question nobody has measured yet, and if the ducts are the problem, a new unit pushes air into the same leaks.
