Moving in Boulder: The Hard Part Is Where the Truck Parks
About half of Boulder rents and CU students are close to a quarter of the people in town, so the leases here nearly all turn over in the same stretch of late summer. The university squeezes residence hall move-in into roughly three days in mid August and the private lease year flips around those weeks.
A big share of the city changes address at once, on streets never laid out for it. Twelve Neighborhood Parking Permit zones plus a seasonal zone cover University Hill, the blocks near downtown and Boulder Junction, enforced 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. A truck at the curb with no arrangement gets a citation, not a shrug.
So a Boulder move is a parking question and a lead time question first. The boxes are the easy part.
Everyone Moves At Once, Onto Streets With Permit Signs
In most towns a mover asks how many bedrooms you have. In Boulder the first useful question is which block you live on, because that sets the crew, the truck and whether your sofa gets carried a hundred feet before it reaches the tailgate.
Walk out to your curb this afternoon and read the sign at the corner. If it names a Neighborhood Parking Permit zone, the hours printed on it are what your whole day has to work around. Photograph that sign and send it with your first message to any moving company. It is the most useful thing you can hand them and almost nobody does it.

Get a tape measure out before anyone quotes you. The tightest spot in an old Boulder walk-up is hardly ever the front door, it is the half landing where the staircase doubles back. Measure that gap and measure your longest piece of furniture, and if the furniture wins, say so on the phone. That is a fine conversation in July and a bad surprise in August.
Not all of town is like that. A Table Mesa ranch or a Gunbarrel unit gives the crew a driveway and a straight run to the door, so it should cost less. Pine Brook Hills and Boulder Heights are the opposite, Boulder addresses up canyon roads where a full size truck may not make the turn, so say the neighborhood name out loud when you call.
On paperwork, moving and wrecking is a licensed contractor class inside the city limits. It is a City of Boulder Class D-1, and every class the city issues carries general liability of $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate with the City of Boulder named as an additional insured. Leaving Colorado is a different check and a better one. Interstate carriers hold a USDOT number, and the federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration publishes a free lookup showing that company's authority and insurance. When To Move And When To Book, Month By Month
January through April: the quiet, cheap window
Nobody here moves unless they have to, so crews have room and quotes soften. If you control your dates, this is where the money is, and it is the easiest stretch of the year to get a company out to look at your stairs in person instead of pricing you off a phone call.
May: graduation empties one half of the city
CU turns out and a wave of student housing empties in days. Storage near campus tightens first and the cheap units go, so reserve a summer unit before the semester ends, not after.
Mid July: book August now or take what is left
This is the deadline that matters, because calendars fill three to four weeks ahead of the turnover. Get three things in writing: truck size, whether a shuttle is planned and what the price does if the parking falls through.
Mid August: the three day crunch
Residence hall move-in is compressed into about three days and the lease year flips in the same weeks, with permit zones enforced straight through. Load early, keep the truck off The Hill when everyone else is on it and pick a backup spot before the crew arrives.
September through December: calm, then wind
The city settles and pricing eases. Respect the wind: NOAA's lab here logged 262 events of 70 mph or more between 1969 and 2022, December and January the worst of them, so never leave an open trailer or a stack of flattened boxes out overnight. It will not be where you left it.
Ten minutes at the curb, before you call anyone
Read the sign at your corner and note the zone and the hours. Pick the nearest spot a long truck could legally sit and pace the distance to your door. Then count the steps up and count the landings, because a crew prices flights and turns, not rooms.
